I don't have a lot of experience with NL - but I played some 1/1NL at a casino once, and it was 10x looser than Party's 10c/25c

<hijack> does the "rule of five" apply to NL? how bad is 5/10 and 10/20 live, if they spread that high? [/ QUOTE ] No not really. It is more about the ratio of donkeys to solid players that make the real difference in live NL play. At the 1/2 NL and 2/5 NL level you will have between 30% and 100% of the other players being total chip spewing donks. At 5/5 NL and 5/10 NL, there tends to be a lot more money in play and the players, even if donkeys, play better. Again it is ratio, with few donkeys the higher you go. If you are a winning player at 2/4 NL or 3/6 NL you should not be worried too much sitting most 5/10 NL games and some 10/20 NL games. But there are times where this is not the case and these tend to be the highest limit spread (or going) and you will find some truely solid players. BTW you will find regularly spread games as high as 25/50 NL and some irregularly spread as high as 200/400 NL when the 10K events are in town. |

And I thought I was the only one who cut his teeth online, and then quit playing online once I experienced the live game! And yep, I play pretty much exclusively live for the same reasons, and, because, once I played live, I realized poker is a social game, and if I wanted to bet while sitting in front of a video screen, I'd just play slots or video poker. Live poker is just so much more juicy, and fun to play. [/ QUOTE ] Ditto. My advice is to play higher than usual. Maybe something like 5/10, 6/12, or even 10/20. The games will all play looser than you are used to. What works for me is to play in a game where I buy in for almost all of the $ I have with me. You don't want to play 2/4 if you have $400 in your pocket ready to go. But that's me - I play better when I have more $ on the line. You're also gonna play many less hands than you'd play online in the same hours, so you want those BBs to count for something. |

Just a thought. The first time you go you will probably look like a tourist that has never played the game. I would suggest sitting at a lower limit game the first time you go just so you can get a feel for the ettiquette of live play. If you go and sit in a bigger game and do something like leave your chips in the rack on the table you will have a great big sign on your back. It is the little things that once you figure out will make you much more comfortable sitting at higher stakes

i usually just go on day trips to foxwoods, and usually don't have to rebuy.
if you're going on a weekend trip you should obviously have more money. the main point was that what works for me is to play higher than normal at a casino...for some people this could be a disaster but i play better when the $ actually means something to me (sitting w/ $400 in front of me rather than $100) |

You can beat 4-8 to 6-12 with the rake all day long but it can be like a rollercoaster. 3-6 down is like is roulette with cards, it's a joke.
If you're beating 3-6 limit online you've got the game to beat 10-20 and 15-30 live if you've got the BR. OT - Be aware of your body movement when playing above 10-20. You don't need sunglasses and a hood but be consistent in your movements. Also when someone makes a play at a pot and you have a close call, strong means weak and weak means strong most of the time. Best of Luck |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I ya know, not too loose but not too tight [/ QUOTE ] ???? ?? wtf? you cant win in low limit because everyone chases. [/ QUOTE ] I just dont feel like sitting in a game like .5/1 online where its no foldem holdem. I would rather play against some better players, call me crazy... I beat 2/4 for 2.98bb/100 over 25k hands and 3/6 for 2.2bb/100 over only 4k hands... I'm thinking I might jump into 5/10 or something near that first [/ QUOTE ] The problem with this thread is that it assumes that all live games are equally tough/loose. Depending on where you want to play and when you want to play, the answers to your question will vary. I played in a live 8/16 game last weekend that was as crazy as party .50/1 beginner tables. There were two drunks at the table who were raising each other blind preflop. I've also played in 2/4 games that were super tight. Your mileage will vary. |

Your mileage will vary. [/ QUOTE ] I play low limit poker in the Seattle area 3/6 and 4/8. I find this to be true. I have run into some likely bro's at the table as well as some drunken microsofties out to gambOOL it up. One advantage you get live that you don't get online is being able to match the play to a face. I have a hard time remembering all the plays "cardshark9714" made online. However, that creepy guy in the hat down there that hit on my sister? He is weak tight and likes to peel the flop when he doesn't quite have the pot odds. There are even some stereotypes that people seem to fit into more often than not. -D |
