The only time to get away from it might have been pre-flop. You pretty much know at that point that you are at best a flip against whatever this guy has, even if he is a complete monkey.

It's a little different since you are playing cash but I think the following still applies: Harrington says that if you get set over sett'ed, you are an idiot if you don't end up going broke. He goes on to discourage playing 22-44 for the purpose of making a set due to the fact that they can often break you when you do make your set.
