OMG shawshank, fight club and one flew over the cuckoo's nest were all much better books than movies and I saw the movies first!

If I had to say one book, it would be the fellowship of the rings. The first half of that book was long and dull with too much description. It only picked up once they got to rivendell. The movie was much better IMO but the other 2 books picked up alot so the movies had no chance to match that.

I haven't read the latter two books but Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is a short story. It's very good indeed, but I think I'd have to say the film is better because it fleshes everything out so much more.

Actually, I never saw A History of Violence, but if the story is exactly the same, the movie should be better... the artwork is so painful in the "graphic novel".

I guess this doesn't count, since I'm not saying the movie was better, but the movie and book versions of To Kill a Mockingbird were pretty much equally excellent.

Movie better than the book:

-Goodfellas (based on Wiseguys by Nicholas Pileggi); maybe this isn't what you had in mind given that the book was non-fiction.
-Lord of the Rings; tried to read only the first book, clunkiest piece of writing I ever tried to wade through.
-Stand by Me; based on "The Body," terrific acting made it work better than the story, I think.
-Guns of Navarone; OK novel, but better movie, outstanding photography.

I'll agree on Godfather. The novel had a subplot regarding Sonny's wife that just seemed useless.

If it counts as a movie, Band of Brothers.

I agree on the Godfather.
