Default The movie was better than the book

Inspired by one of Dominic's recent rants against people who always say, "The book was better" I was thinking about movies that were better than the book. I have a couple.

2001
A Beautiful Mind (Book was boring)
Fight Club

Any others?

MASH.

(Actually, I never read it, but that's what I hear).

I also heard the same about Bridges of Madison County, but I neither saw that movie or read that book.

I completely disagree with you on Fight Club. Yes the movie was awesome, but the book actually was better.

The scene in the book where he spots Tyler on the beach was awesome and inexplicably left out of the movie

Ending of book>>>ending of movie

Books are commonly better than movies IMO, but there are of course exceptions.

As a side note, I think the problem with people who say "the book is better" constantly say it to people who say "This movie is good". It's less about quality of content and more about condescending comments.

I would agree with this statement. I think it's mainly a tool that people use to let everyone know that they read, and therefore must be smart.

like i said in the other thread, you could only judge the book better than the movie if we all had identical imaginations.

It's not enough to compare the text. Cross-media judgements are inherently flawed. Saying "The TV series was better than the movie" re: MASH etc. may have more validity, but comparing book and film is difficult. Comparing book and screenplay may be more acceptable.
