Perhaps, yes. But he'd certainly call with them too, and may even raise, so why not give him the chance? By checking, you give him the option to play passively and see a free turn, and you don't want to do that. Granted, he probably bets pairs and flush draws as you said. But he puts at least that much money in the pot when you bet first, and when he does decide to check behind, you've given your opponent a free chance to crack your Aces.
