I was actually thinking that this might be what his "friend" did to him which is why he wants to get him back.

Because it's a hassle/expensive for companies to fire people - and if he gets off to a good start, they may let him slide.

Your motivations make this horrible. If you were doing it because you thought it wrong that this guy was lying, it would be acceptable. (hell, more than acceptable even)
