To win the central?
I think the Buccos could do this.

Can someone explain to a very very casual baseball fan what happened to the Cardinals? I thought they were supposed to be a top tier team, no? And I thought the Astros were supposed to be good too...and I heard a bunch about the Cubs making huge moves this offseason. What all happened?

Simple explanation :

There are tons of Houston and St Louis homers on this board. Also, Eckstein is gritty and clutch and a winner.

Also, the Cubs are still a very good team and I think most smart, knowledgeable baseball people had the Cubs and Brewers at the top of the division this year.

I also think everyone felt the NL Central would be awful again, except for the previously mentioned homers.

well, they weren't a top tier team last year and they didn't really get better in the off-season, so no.

i remember watching Opening Day and thinking "I have no idea how this lineup is gonna score with any consistency whatsoever"

and it's not like they have a good rotation to balance that out.

I am a lifelong Astros fan and I did not think they would be any good this year, not with

1. 4 automatic outs in a row every time through the lineup (Everett, Ausmus, Pitcher, Biggio)

2. "Roy O and pray for snow"

3. Lights On Lidge

I'm a lifelong Pirates fan and while I have hope, they are playing at the level of talent they have, and I think the Brewers overall record indicates where they are as a team as well. The rest of the league is underachieving big time, and will have to pick it up at some point. While my heart hopes the Pirates can stay in it, my mind tells me it will come down to St. Louis and Milwaukee.

The Brewers schedule is ridiculously easy over the next 38 games. They only have two series (six games) against winning teams; Detroit and Minny.

Yeah but the Cubs schedule is also pretty easy, they get to play the Brewers.

OT: How many times does each NLC team play the other NLC teams? Isn't it like 18-19 each?
