It did not cost him anything to get you to fold and depending on the stacks it might benefit him to have shorty around for an orbit or two. He actually might need to say something to you (for education purposes).

I have done this occasionally, but the stack has to be perfect, something like 9000 to 4400 to 100 so I really don't care if short stack triple up a few times. but usually it should be done with a bad hand and pushes OP out of the hand preflop though.

That's right. Instead, he just called pf, pushed on a draw on the turn, got me to fold the best hand, and tripled up the pfr'r. The stacks went from ~9,000, 4,500, 1,500, to ~7,500, 3,000, and 4,500, respectively. The blinds were so huge at 600, 1,200 that there was virtually no play, and I was out 2 hands later and the big stack that pushed me out lost the tournament to the small stack he saved.

I don't see how anyone could have concluded from my post that the big stack did the right thing without knowing the stack sizes and the blinds. In any case, I'm back to my usual rule of never educating the ignorant.

My question had nothing to do with being surprised that low stakes sit-n-go players play poorly. I'm not. I was wondering specifically if there was any +EV to explaining to another player the value of checking down in that situation.

Thanks to those with sincere responses.
