It won't work any more - these days they check with Interpol etc so if you're on the run they will find out straight away. Twenty five years ago though yes, it was an option:

Most of what I had heard or read about the Legion had left me feeling that it was a place where only desperate men would go. Well, I was certainly desperate."

took freaking forever but last night I got through all of MT2R's prison trip-report thread and it was really incredible.

Solidifies my opinion that if I knew I was going to a place like that for 5 yrs I would skip out any way I could.

Obviously if it's a place where I would feel mostly safe I would just do the time.
MT2R didn't even have it as bad as he could have. He was tough enough to survive his 2 mths there and never got raped. Just some threats, a beat-down, solitary, and living in pretty constant fear and mentally scarred pretty badly upon getting out of there.
Really could have been worse. He did survive afterall.
And even that sounds truly awful/horrific to me.

How bad would it have been for him if he was stuck there for 1 year or 4 years or longer?

No thanks. I'll go to Africa, Asia, South America, wherever I can and try to make it.
