Oh god.
Okay, no matter what number you choose, the end result is a multiple of 9.

Proof:
Number = 10A + B
10A + B - (A + B) = 9A

They use the same symbol for all the multiples of 9. (Although this symbol cycles, so it's not the same symbol every time you do this)
Whatever symbol it is, is what's shown in the crystal ball.

Holy crap, can't believe how superstitious some people are.

This one doesn't work on card players, since they remember every card they see the first time, and notice the trick.
