yelowdoyle,

Are you one of those guys who talks about how awesome defense was in the 70s?

[/ QUOTE ]

lol, i didn't watch basketball till last year. (I started watching the Lakers after Shaq was traded....oops). So I don't know if it is a new thing or not, but it annoys me either way.

What he was getting at is that defense now is much better than it was in the 70s and 80s. Just look at the points per team. Many teams don't average 100 points per game now. Back in the 80s, it was normal to average 110 per game.

Also, I find it amazing that you can make the all-defensive team when you cost your team 2-3 layups per game complaining about foul calls on the other end.

[/ QUOTE ]
Honestly. This annoys me so much about Kobe, and the league in general.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think yellowdoyle's complaint here is legitimate. I'm sure plenty of coaches don't enjoy seeing a player get back on defenses late, due to complaining to the ref, only to result in an easy scoring opportunity for the other team. I wouldn't mind having more player's realize that sometimes you don't get the call, but quit crying & get your ass back on defense.

That, and how people don't even [censored] TRY TO PLAY DEFENSE, they just run to a spot and try to draw a charge. I really really hope something is done about that. Not sure how plausible that is, but that is so frustrating. They are not making a play on the ball in any shape or form when they do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't agree with this. When you're rotating to help out on a defender, often times is good to get to the spot before an offensive player does. It stops their penetration & gives teammates an extra second to help out, while the offensive player maneuvers around you. I think positional defense is key, and easily unrecognized due to being hard to track w/ statistics.

You could just as easily complain that making a play at the ball by swiping at it is a case of lazy footwork on defense, and is considered bad defense.

No offense to Battier, I think he's an awesome defender, but I don't think he's a top 2 defensive SF.

1/2 Josh Howard/Shawn Marion
3 Bruce Bowen (I cheated and listed him as a SG above).
4 Tayshaun Prince
5/6 Shane Battier/Gerald Wallace
