TSC,

Just watch him. He does a lot of switching, playing areas, that sort of thing.

Here's a good excerpt from a Tex Winter interview by Lakernoise Blog (via TrueHoop):
[ QUOTE ]
"I'd like to see him play better defense," Winter said, adding that he had addressed the issue recently with Bryant but didn't come away with the idea that Bryant was intent on changing his approach.

"You know Kobe," Winter said with a chuckle. "He has his game plan. I think he heard me. But he feels there's a certain way he's got to play the game. But it doesn't involve a lot of basically sound defense."

Because the Lakers need so much of his effort at the offensive end, Bryant has adopted a save-energy plan on the defensive end, Winter said. "He's basically playing a lot of one-man zone. He's doing a lot of switching, zoning up, trying to come up with the interception.

"The way Kobe plays defensively affects the team," Winter added. "Anybody that doesn't play consistently good defense hurts the team. That's not only Kobe. Our other guards tend to gamble and get beat. Another problem is that the screen and roll is not played correctly."

Kobe's made this team the last 2 years on name alone, esp. last year. He's usually too tired from jacking up 29 shots per game to give 100% on D. This is from a life-long Laker fan.

Also, I find it amazing that you can make the all-defensive team when you cost your team 2-3 layups per game complaining about foul calls on the other end.

Honestly. This annoys me so much about Kobe, and the league in general.

That, and how people don't even [censored] TRY TO PLAY DEFENSE, they just run to a spot and try to draw a charge. I really really hope something is done about that. Not sure how plausible that is, but that is so frustrating. They are not making a play on the ball in any shape or form when they do that.

1st Team:
Pg - Chauncey Billups
Sg - Bruce Bowen
Sf - Josh Howard
Pf - KG
C - Camby

2nd Team
Pg - Kirk Hinrich
Sg - Josh Smith
Sf - Shawn Marion
Pf - Tim Duncan
C - Ben Wallace

Can't believe Kobe (and Raja Bell) made first team. Josh Howard was robbed.

These are the worst selections I have ever seen. Like others are saying Kobe simply plays defense only when he wants too. Also, Raja Bell is a scrub who has had a few good defensive moments against Kobe, therefore we name him first team, wtf?!?!?!?!

And Jason Kidd?!?!?! The dude is like one year away from complete knee replacements, he is slower than i don't know what. That is a joke to have him on the team. He is no longer the defensive force was, obv. How do they have him selected over Billups?
