Its probably a bad deal. Say you encountered this situation 10 times. If you take the deal, out of those ten times you will net 60 mill. If you decline the deal, you will win the tourney 50% of the time, for 50 mil, and lose the other 50%, for 30 mil. So, declining the deal makes you 20 mil.

The issue of perks from being world champ lurks around, but i highly doubt they are enough to justify taking a 20 mil loss.

I already stated that it is a $2 million - NOT $20 million - decision (you are talking about this happening 10 times, which averages out to the $2 million).

Barring someone having zero common sense, savvy, and charisma, I think it's almost impossible to not make back that $2 million and then some via having the title.

But that's just one element of the equation, as others have pointed out above.

I dont see why people are getting all moral about it.

Its a transaction. He is offering the deal. Exchanging the definite $ value of 1st for the potential earnings value of first.

Interesting choice, because that is precisely the deal I would offer my opponent heads up: you take the glory and bracelet; I get the first place cash. And then I would throw it.

Many people don't play poker just to make money. That is certainly part of it -- a major part -- but there certainly is an element of competition and of gamesmanship.

I'm quite certain "winning" and taking the 2nd place prize money would make you more money in the long run and be the +EV move -- but could you live with yourself and the thought that you made it that far and then didn't go that one extra measure...?

Take the deal, getting a sweet deal from a
pokerroom for the next 3-5 years will more
than make up for the money. Plus, considering
stated in your problem that villain is paying
the taxes on the 10, the difference is probaly not much
more than $1.5-2 mil

[/ QUOTE ]

You can't factor taxes into the equation, as they would even out based on the taxes that you would pay in your example from the "sweet deal from a pokerroom"

The same people who say no are the same people who think you should pay taxes for moral reasons (you should pay them so youre ass hole doesnt get violated in prison)

The groupies alone would make it worth it. My sister knows who Raymer and Moneymaker are but couldn't point out williams or farha out of a police lineup.
