Default Re: What if Michael Vick trained for 500M speed skating?

Clarification. If you took Vick as a youth and he trained for speedskating, he could be good. Noone is disputing that NBA, NFL, MLB athletes are not capable of excelling at other sports if they are given proper training as youths. But to say Vick could win a speedskating medal in the 2010 Olympics is ludicrous.

Could he win the gold with three months of intensive training? (or take your favorite NFL speedster - S. Moss, etc.)
How long would it take?

[/ QUOTE ]

If you have ever attempted ice skating and think it is mildly possible you are retarted.

If you have never attempted ice skating, I don't think you understand how different a skill it is from running. Saying this would be like saying could Michael Vick who has never ridden a bike in his life become a professional cyclist in a few months.

Exactly. No one cares about the fact that running and speed skating are different sports. Athleticism will take care of that difference.

And what is this nonsense about high school and college speed skaters in Europe? Any evidence? If so, why dont these countries dominate over the US where competitive speed skating is extremely rare....

The point is Olymians are just as good of athletes. Not everyone who is a great athlete goes into football. A lot do, but some guys get into speed skating, track or cycling. It is pretty ignorant to think that every great athlete in the world goes into football or basketball.

Would Michaek Vick have a chance of winning the 100m sprint in the summer olympics? no? Then he doesn't have a chance of winning the 500m speed skate.

Plenty of people that have played hockey from time to time over the course of their whole lives and still couldn't take 10 full-speed strides on freshly flooded ice.

If he were to try it, he'd have much more success in short-track skating I'd imagine.

note: regular speed-skating is the one where there's an inside and outside lane and the 2 of them just race.

short-track is the one on a hockey rink with padded boards and 4 racers with helmets and they lean over and touch the ice during turns, and push and fight each other for position.

note 2: canada dominates short track. Jeremy Wotherspoon bangs bitches.

didn't Bo Jackson, Willie Gault(?), and company try this with bobsledding years back?
If I recall, they did train very hard in an effort to compete.
Don't remember the results, but safe to say they weren't great.

No, but most great athletes tend to flock towards the more popular and more money-potential sports within their country and culture. A good example is the lack of competitiveness in American soccer, because it has become a very much secondary sport on all levels, high school and up. I seem to remember in my highschool, many of the soccer players were simply ex football players who didnt have the size, speed, or strength to be a varsity starter there.

To think that someone like Lebron James or Michael Vick would ever go into speed skating seems quite ridiculous... their extreme athleticism would take them to some much more popular and competitive sport (within their country of course) where they can reap current and future benefits.

Olympic Speed Skating Medal Totals
Norway Population 4.5 Milllion 79 Medals
Netherlands Population 16 Mil. 66 Medals
USA Population 295 Mil. 56 Medals

Just how are we dominating these small countries?

And as for your point on athleticism, it can only take you so far. To think it will take care of the difference is assinine.
