[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] anyways, startups are only a good way to get rich if you're okay with the likelihood you won't get rich. if i HAD to make a million dollars, i'd sell drugs. if i HOPED to make a million dollars and i had an idea i was passionate about, i'd do the startup thing. [/ QUOTE ] In the grand scheme of things, "a million dollars" isn't that big a number... 10,000 sales of a $100 product 1,000 sales of a $1,000 product The question on "a million", is more, "how fast?" [/ QUOTE ] sure, assuming zero development or support costs. this is a ludicrous statement and you know it. |

Create a new eBay. The fees are getting ridiculous. [/ QUOTE ] Seriously. You need to be selling things for nearly $2 above cost or else the eBay fees will eat most of your profit up if you do anything but a basic $0.99 starting bid listing. |

I'm just saying it truly is ridiculous what eBay is getting away with on fees right now. The second you put a cheaper option out there that even looks remotely like it could compete with them, eBay lowers it's fees to put you out of business then jacks them up again. |

I really don't think they would drop the price of their fees. They are obviously doing fine financially and have too big of a following. Most people would be so comfortable with eBay they wouldn't leave, even if a cheaper company came along.
Would it be tough to compete with them? Sure. I am sure there are copy cat auction companies all over the web that fail every day. But it could/can be done ... Just would take one hell of a business plan, and lots of moolah. |

[ QUOTE ]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nssfmTo7SZg Great video. Presentation by one of the YouTube founders. Freakin I agree with not making 'another one' but I think that you can definately identify somebody that has a great idea but is implementing it wrong and do it better. Examples: MySpace>Friendster Skype>Vonage Craigslist (hopefully) > eBay (ok, i'm dreaming, someday maybe) PartyPoker>ParadisePoker PokerStars>PartyPoker RakeAid>All other rakeback sites Google>AltaVista IE>Netscape Mozilla>IE etc That video is kinda dry but it is amazing. Talks about how technology builds on technology and the reason you cannot make the new new thing now is because it isn't even possible yet, technology has to catchup. Another thing that I think a lot of wanna-be web titans overlook, as sniper alluded to, is that just thinking up the next YouTube is not a path to becoming a billionaire. Those guys had a very talented and devoted and experienced team and raised a lot of money to do what they did. They also worked very hard for a long period of time (sure it doesn't seem long knowing that they made so much money, but they didn't know they were going to make all that money as they were doing it...they were just another nobody start up hoping to get lucky) [/ QUOTE ] Great video. Really really worth my time. |
