isn't the mortality rate for these operations like 1 in 100 for banding? The bypass has been decreased to somewhere between 1 in 1000 to 10000 or so.

This is a serious operation that shouldn't be done without a lot of research

Do the research.

I couldn't imagine taking the risk with my life and health for something I could do on my own. However, if you simply can't do it on your own, it's probably much less of a risk to undergo gastric bypass than it is to remain overweight.

The two things I've picked up about it is first, mortality depends heavily on the experience of your doctor. Having a highly experienced doctor and reduce your likelihood of death by a factor of 5.

Second, many people end up in the hospital with serious complications that on average cost 40K. I don't know what percentage have complications.

According to Wiki you have it the other way around.

Lower mortality rate, only 1 in 2000 versus 1 in 200 for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery

40k for the complications alone? Wow, thank god I will get it for free if I want it. I do also agree though that it is higher risk to be over weight than to actually have the operation. Thanx for all answers.

I have a friend who died from Atkins diet. Its like if we stay overweight we risk to die too soon, if we diet we also risk dying, and same with with the operation. Its a very tough choice.

I am totally dubious of this statement. Explain.

Huh maybe taking the easy route with dieting on atkins (i'm not sure about your friend dieing from atkins, but whatever) or surgery is risky, but anyone can diet safely and begin exercising they just require alot more will power.

Atkins longterm leads to organ failure, IIRC.

I can't believe people are still doing these with the risk of death so high when they haven't tried other methods (not speaking of anyone in this thread, just in general). Some people look at these operations as a starting point to losing weight when they really should be the alternative to dangerous morbid obeseity (i know i spelled that wrong).

Umm, no it doesn't. Show me some studies. Every study that's been coming out over the past 5 years has said the opposite (except for the propoganda released by vegan groups, like when they lied about Atkins' death). I eat low carb as a lifestyle (I've lost a MASSIVE amount of weight doing it), and my blood work is immaculate.

Also, you need to distinguish between Atkins and the "some random crap where I started eating bacon and no vegetables diet." That is not Atkins. Atkins - even at its strictest - includes a lot of vegetables, lean meats and supplementation.
