Don't know whether this has been released yet but you can listen to the full album on myspace.com/theshins.

There is an article in todays (1/24) Metro about them. They sounded pretty cool. The lead singer was talking about collaborating with a guy from the decemberists, which can't be a bad thing.

The Shins have no energy live. Its like they are kids at a recital.

I totally agree with this statement. I love all their albums, but their recent performances on SNL and Letterman were devoid of energy. Especially SNL - if that was the first time I heard "New Slang" I wouldn't give the song a second chance.

I really want to like the Shins, but their albums have just bored me to tears. I don't think I've made it through either of the first two in one sitting. There are songs I like, but it just doesn't come together for me.

That said, this album is absolutely a home run. I am curious to go back and listen to the other two again to see whether it was that they got over the hump, or that I "get it" now.

I have been planning to buy this CD based on the strength of Phantom Limb and whatever the second song they played on SNL was. Hopefully I will get to it this weekend but may try to listen to it first on their website (or Rhapsody) tonight.

colgin,

The second SNL song, New Slang, is not of this album, but is a must-own track.

potato,

Very strange, imo, that you have not really enjoyed either of their first two releases, but this one grabbed you.

I've never heard the first two albums but on my first pass through this I like it a lot. A Comet Appears is easily my favorite so far.

As I've mentioned I'm not a huge Shins fan. But there is a fantastic version featuring Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) you should find of New Slang if you like it. There also is a duet of Past and Pending with Beam.
