The Shins - Wincing The Night Away 10/10

The album (due Jan. 2007) was leaked a few days ago, and after 8 full spins, I'm ready to pass judgement.

This is the best album I've heard so far this decade.

Find it and listen to it if you can. The melodies are complex, but incredibly addictive once you hear them a few times. "Sleeping Lessons" is F'ing perfect.

I really enjoy The Shins and each album they put out gets better on repeated listens. However, if you've seen them live you realize that do not put on a very good show. They're a great studio band and a mediocre-at-best live band. Always disappointing. I wonder why that is -- I guess some musicians just aren't suited to performing in front of crowds. They like the perfection of production.

Agreed. When I saw them at the Gorge in WA, they tried to play each song verbatim from the albums. Pretty boring. The best live musicians take risks and their music to different directions.

Love their LPs though.

You're crazy. They're excellent live. When I first saw them, (months before Chutes was released) I expected them to suck and they were overwhelmingly good.

OP, just curious, are you going to buy the CD when it's released?

Modest Mouse is like this too, just not that good live. Umm, I'd like to hear the new album sometime soon.

I'm booking flights and buying tickets when they go on sale next Monday - first time I've gone interstate for a band before.

If someone could tell me they don't suck live I'd appreciate it. Lie if you like.
