My wife and I had a similar issue with my son. I was raised catholic and my mother and grandmother are devout catholics. They wanted our son baptized but also knew that I or my wife don't attend church and I don't believe in the catholic faith any longer.
I told my mom, because she was part of the family, that I would be willing to be respectful of her wishes and go through with the baptism, but she would have to do all the leg-work. All we would do is show up at the designated time and place. The boy is now 15 months old and she hasn't brought it up again since he was born. We put the onus back on her and she hasn't done a thing to plan it. My conscience is clear. I figure he is so young right now anyway, it won't matter to him one way or another. We also plan to let him choose his own faith, should he choose one at all. It's up to him. I don't see a problem in going through the motions just to ease things over with the family. It's only an hour of your time. What's the big whoop? Yeah, yeah, it's the principle of the thing. I think that's a load of crap. If you can sacrifice an hour of your family's life just to make your mother happy, do it. |

While I'm a Christian (and very religious) I have to agree with everyone who says that having your son baptized isn't going to matter. It's not going to have any effect on his life one way or the other, so why bother? Also, different "sects" of Christianity aren't important at all. Sects or denominations are just man-made groupings that seemingly only serve to keep people apart.

i can tell OP is going to be a great dad.
OP: tell your parents that you'd get him baptized but then your kemite mistress might sacrifice him to some voodoo witch doctor god thingie. |

Oh yeah we made fun of mixed kids in school, but we REALLY made fun of the UNBAPTIZED. The jokes were hilarious.
Seriously, if you start leaning toward capitulation, consider that you'll later be pressured to put your son through every other sacrament as well. You sure you want to condition your son this way instead of letting him decide for himself? There is absolutely nothing preventing him from getting baptized of his own free will when he can make his own choices. |
