how many have you had an erector set? I'd pick a basic erector set 9/10 times and let them get legos like all kids do when they decide they want them

Everyone is impressed by the aircraft carrier. I am far more impressed by the Venice rendition. That is awesome.
Legos are best. Lincoln Logs are awesome memories to have though. Knex and erector sets are okay as you get older..but just not the level of fun Legos are throughout.
