Check the fine print. I've never seen a deal that good on ETrade.

It's not really the price of the stocks that eastbay was worrying about. It's the commissions in relation to your starting bankroll. Everytime you make a purchase, you're paying 1+% of your bankroll. If you make small purchases, let's say 4 shares of a $50 stock, then you're paying $13 on a $200 purchase. $26 total, after you sell. So just to breakeven, you'd need to get returns of 13%. And most people planning to dabble, aren't going to be holding some 4 share purchase for 2 years. So it's unlikely that you'll make that 13% on average.

No you don't. You have to be a power Etrade member.

$1000 really isn't enough to do much of anything. But I guess you gotta start somewhere. ETrade is good, I like it. But for cheaper commissions, you might want to check out scottrade at $8 a trade. Also check out this thread

Surf,
If you are not seeking any of the "add on" services, such as advice by brokers, notification of IPOs, certain lines of credit, charge cards, margin accts, just go with the best deal on commisions. If you want more than "discount" services, forget the commission structure and evaluate all aspects. Good luck

InteractiveBrokers

USD .005 per share for US stocks. $1.00 min per order.

They have a pretty low initial deposit amt if I remember right. Not sure about 1K though.

Didn't someone say that IB has a minimum amount of trades you need to make per month?
