You pay sales tax when you apply for a new title in your name. If there is a spot on the back on the title to write in a sales price, they will use that, otherwise they may require a bill of sale. With my last car I had minor problems in Alabama with just the price on the back of the title because I guess they are used to seeing bills of sale here, but I managed to convince the clerk that the information on the back of the title was the same thing. Both parties will probably have to put down their signature saying that the price you're claiming is what you actually paid. I know a lot of people including myself who will write in a much lower price anyway, with my last car the clerk told me "You shouldn't have written such a high sales price in here, now you have to pay taxes on all of it." My sample size is nowhere near large enough to say whether this is a good idea though, apparently you can go to jail for it.

No tax, do not hand over the check without seeing the title signed over, not necessary to be at the bank, write up some small purchase receipt with the date, amount, and car, go to the DMV and get tags, notify your insurance.

[/ QUOTE ]

doesn't the title have to be notorized?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think that varies from state to state. In Colorado, the title is supposed to be notarized.

thanks for confirming that...there is no sales tax if it's a private party transaction

[/ QUOTE ]

Again, this depends on the laws in your state. In Colorado, you have to pay sales tax on a private party car sale when you transfer the titles and get tags. Some unscrupulous tax cheats will report a sales price less than the actual sales price, but i know none of the honorable people on 2+2 would even think of doing such a thing.

Try this website http://www.dmv.org/ga-georgia/car-registration.php
for a link to figure out to who and how much taxes you owe. Apparently GA started doing sales tax on vehicles in January 2006. Bad beat...
