The letter writer countered, in essence, if you have a choice of living next door to a pit bull, knowing there is a 5% chance it will one day attack you, or a dachshund, knowing there is a 95% chance it will one day attack you, which do you choose?

Hello again, black_russian!

Puzzled over your comment that, "You have no clue what you read," I checked in with my memory consultant, Google. Here's the article I referred to:

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/conten.../060206fa_fact

Now the letter of rebuttal is tough to find on the New Yorker site. It seems they make letters very hard to locate:

http://greg.org/archive/2003/11/24/t...f_gregorg.html

But being the persistent little searcher I am, I located someone's blog post from March, 2006, confirming my memory of the letter:

http://specialwayofbeingafraid.blogs...c-in-mail.html

There now, are we all squared away on what I read?

Toddy, I agree with you about there being a huge misconception about pitbulls. I have one, her name is Bella, and she is a great dog. Great with my little cousins, my little brother, and anybody else i can think of. I also think that they are beautiful dogs. Very well-built and proportional, plus they are shorthaired and don't shed. My dog loves nothing more than sleeping twenty hours a day, playing for about an hour and then laying around till she falls asleep again.

RunDownHouse, i've read that article too, and it does seem like people think they are more dangerous because pits are the "in" badass dog right now. Can't find it either though.

As long as people keep listening to one side of the story on pits, they will only think one way. Remember when people thought people with AIDS could infect you by touch. Same thing with people when they hear about a pitbull: "Oh no, they are so dangerous! I'm 100% sure that they will attack at any time!"

If there are any dog-breeders on this board, I would like to hear from them, but until then nobody really knows what they are talking about wrt pitbull aggression and behavior being more unpredictable than other dogs. Say whatever you want, but until you have owned one or been around one extensively your opinion is uninformed. News stories only tell what is the most exciting, not everything.
