I tutored for freshman to seniors in college for three years and I've seen a lot of stuff this bad or worse. I've literally seen about three essays where kids type "ne" instead of "any," "ur" instead of "your" etc, and honestly wonder whats wrong with their work. I was the main ESL tutor though so I imagine what I saw was rougher than most.

Yea this is bad though, pretty damn depressing.

Oh, come one, OTB. He's not bitching, he's posting this for entertainment, and I don't buy the "blame the teacher" crap. There are kids who are legitimately stupid, there are kids who just don't care, etc. Not every teacher is some genius who can reach every kid and turn him from a loser to a winner, especially when they get paid $40k/yr or whatever.

Its easy to say, "You teachers should turn this kid into a pillar of the community, into a paragon of virtue and scholarship!" when that's just not going to happen without a superhuman effort that should be expected of noone.

The world needs ditch diggers, too.

In reality, by 9th grade there is very little an individual teacher can do.
