codewarrior I agree I studied my ass of for calc 1 and got an A I basically used my calculater to check my work...

One problem I had with some teachers is they overwhelm you with homework.. 30+ problems a night doesn't really encourage mee to do anything but half ass it.

What is calc 1? differation, integration, and limits?
Basically memorizing/understanding rules and basic adding subtracting.

Why is a computer necessary for basic Calculus nowadays? Or even a calulator? Seriously, I'm curious what they are teching now that would require this.

it lets the teachers teach higher concepts without wasting hours of classtime on basic derivations from previous math classes.

for example, calc II is all about crappy, time consuming, not always straightforward ways to do ridiculous integrals. you need to be able to do these integrals in calc 3 and diffy q. however, if you are wasting your timme on calc II material, you are not fully realizing the current material. don't waste your time integrating by partial fractions, and instead plug it into a computer aided algebra system, and continue with the relevant applications coursework.

i would have dropped the course if my calc 3 and diffyq teachers had forced me to integrate and differentiate without technology.

I can't remember using a calculator in Calc I.

Supposedly we will be using it a lot in my upper level dynamics class. Most of the professors in ourdepartment use it for research as well.

I like Mathematica more than Matlab, but everyone else prefers Matlab. I also use VI over EMACS. That's just the way I roll.

For me, Calc 1 just went over differentiation and related subjects, and calc 2 covered integration and its applications like curved areas, 3d areas ad areas under curves.

For my freshman year I was forced to take a class on Maple, and I found it to be really helpful for my calc classes for checking answers and seeing how things are done

Mathematica's good for symbolic manipulation( I believe wolfram of complex dynamical systems created it) so I can assume smileEH that's why it was chosen for your course. Haven't used it since uni, and only then we used it for checking messy integration/differentiations.

MATLAB I've used alot more. I would use MATLAB if I had to choose - it takes a little getting used too but for iterative processes and plotting attractors and stuff or that ilk it's v. good and more suited to programming types.
