Re: Luxury Foods - get it / don\'t get it
I like a lot of luxury foods. In particular, Foie Gras and truffles are always amazing.
Any sort of luxury seafood matters a LOT on the quality of fish. I've had delicious toro and some I wanted to spit out. Same with uni. I'm a big fan of oysters and am really not sure what's not to like about them. Lobster I was so-so on until I had some amazing lobster at French Laundry. In general I don't care for it, but I know how good it can be now. I have had some great caviar dishes, but for the price it seems a bit underwhelming. |

Kobe beef (the real stuff), completely not worth $80/lb. It's good, but you can get a great dry-aged ribeye for much less. This is just me preferring more of a beefy flavor than tender texture, though.
Mildly off-topic, but the idea of "Kobe beef burgers" drives me insane. The entire idea of Kobe beef is in the marbling. WTF would you grind it up?? |

Donkey - hm... I'm beginning to suspect you didn't have particularly fresh uni... -Al [/ QUOTE ] Quite possibly. This wasn't a great place and I ordered the variety platter. It sort of was getting progressively worse and then I hit the uni. Maybe if I'm at some quality sushi place, I'll give it a shot. Probably not, but I'll think about it. |

Re: Luxury Foods - get it / don\'t get it
Shark fin soup is definitely on the do not get list.
Escargot, especially broiled in butter with garlic, are really, really good. Frog legs, done well, are very good. Done badly, are horrible. There is a fine line between the two. Bouchon in Napa and Hugo's Frog Bar in Chicago both do them very well. Don't know if Bouchon in Vegas offers them. Elk and reindeer were both quite good. Again, it's all in the prep. I don't think I could handle Bourdain's "Mission To Tokyo" however. That's a bit much. |

Re: Luxury Foods - get it / don\'t get it
Foie- insanely awesome
Toro- ditto Steak- hmfyeah Lobster- hate it, pretty much the only food i actively hate Caviar- meh as a standalone, can be pretty spectacular though Truffles- excellent Oysters- good, not great Shark Fin Soup- pretty good, but overpriced IMO Sea Cucumber- suprisingly good Abalone- didn't like it, but it was probably the preperation. Peking Duck- may not qualify, but good enough that it should be listed here anyway Dungeness Crab- really good. I'll stop here cause I like most of the things mentioned in this thread, no need to be any more repetitive. |
