Default Luxury Foods - get it / don\'t get it

The following are a list of "luxury" or "gourmet" foods. These are foods that people often react to with "OMFG SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME" when eating it. Some of this stuff I get, and feel kinda like that when eating high quality, well-prepared versions of this stuff. But other of this stuff, I don't really get and am often "eh, whatever" about it. Feel free to add other luxury/gourmet foods. I'm purposefully not getting into drinks here, because that's a complete other topic.

Foie Gras - oh hell yeah I get it
Toro - hell yeah #2
Steak - hell yeah #3

Lobster - I kinda get it, but think it's way overrated
Truffles - same thing. good, sure, but doesn't live up to the hype imo.

Caviar - eh, whatever
Oysters - complete whatever, def dont get this one

Obviously, please expand on my most basic of remarks.

Not boiled over a wooden fire in a cast iron pot, and your own cousin had done the trappin' that day.

Buttered and spiced in a restaurant, overrated.

Humble backgrounds rock.

Steak. There's a difference between a decent sirloin and a cut of Kobe or whatever. It's on the cow's diet and the preparation. DIY > formal setting unless the restaureur knows what steak's about.

Best way to eat oysters, supposedly, is to crack it open and swallow it raw and unchewed. That's not food, that's sensuality. Different creature.

Steak - Argentine style asado is the only way to fly.
(Actually not even really steak. I believe they are called short ribs).

Diablo - pretty in line with your list (especially the "hell yeahs"). I like caviar though, and really like truffles. Lobster can be very good, but in general I prefer like a roast crab.

Tora-fugu (blowfish) - really expensive, kinda just tastes like swordfish to me.

Swordfish - it's pretty good, but I prefer moonfish (for a similar tasting fish) and black cod over it.

eld,
Ive never had foie gras and I dont think I know what toro is. If they are as "hell yeah" as steak then it sounds like I need to try them.

Other than that I agree with the rest of your analysis esp. re: lobster

Masked Man,

[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] toro, but I don't get uni at all.

I haven't tried foie gras, and likely won't after all the recent fallout (never say never, but it's just not likely).

I really like oysters, raw and cooked, but never really thought of them as luxury food.

Toro and I don't agree, but I feel like I'm missing something.

Fore Grais - i just figured out what I was missing all these years, its a true gourmet delight! How come I waited till I was 35 to try this I'll never know.

Steak - depends on the steak cut, the chef, etc... but when its perfect its better than sex.

Lobster - I'm not a huge fan.

Truffles - I have literally had truffle dreams weeks after eating an excellent meal with truffles. That explains how much I love them!

Caviar - As previously said I just don't get it so far, but I keep trying. It makes me want to hurl a bit when I eat it, I must not have tried the real deal yet. I am going to a Petrosian event later this month, hopefully this time I'll finally "get it"

Oysters: I'm too chicken to try them still

Wild Boor: Wow!!!

Venison: If its cooked perfectly and its a great cut then it kills any steak you have ever tried

Ostrich: 10x better than most common beef

Frogs Legs: Better than chicken

PS: good call El D, I love OOT food threads!
