-7 are a possibility. With 8-8 I am starting to think flop bet is highly likely for the villian

Maybe AA or KK that are tilting slightly on a scary flop?

[/ QUOTE ]
It makes absolutely no sense to play any of these hands like this.

He either has a 9, spades, or air, most likely a 9.

There is more than one way to play a hand. No bet on the flop because wanted to c/r. Checking the turn might have been wise, in retrospect, so thank you for advice.. However, as played, I wanted to hear the reads on the villian.

He most likely has an over pair

Nice hand reading.

The only overpair he ever has here is 99.

[/ QUOTE ]

My "nice hand reading" was based on the statement that he was a solid player, a $20 raise would make sense with 9-9 or 8-8 but only those hands. 9-10 suited or A-9 is possible but most "solid" players I know wouldn't raise with those types of hands. If the turn made his hand he was very lucky, I know people love to check raise but with that board and middle set it's better to lay out a nice bet....but I'm sure I'm totally off base.

Bet out on this flop because you want the raise. Bet out on this flop because the turn could be an awful card for you (what will happen to your action if he has KK and an A comes?). Bet out on this flop to get more money in the pot with what is almost always the best hand. Bet out on this flop to disguise those times you're on a draw and want to bluff.

Bet out on this flop.

A "solid player" almost never has an overpair here, and is even less likely to have a set.

Well...it all depends on your definition of a solid player, raising with marginal hands in late position and hoping everybody folds, that can work...but if that real solid guy gets callers then usually he's in trouble and has to get lucky. I'd love to play with a guy like that.
