DC is cool, although I would recommend living outside the city. The good areas outside to live are either Arlington on the Virginia side or Bethesda on the Maryland side. They are really the same place...young, fun little towns. As far as the city is concerned, Adams Morgan, Dupont, and Georgetown are all fun areas. I don't know who would feel safe anywhere in DC - try walking around in Southeast and you won't feel safe at all. Just stay in the Northwest area and you're fine. This is where everyone lives and goes out anyways. It's a fun area.

That said, I have lived in DC for 7 years and am moving to Cali in 5 weeks, so take my advice for what it's worth.
