A bunch of dorky Brits think they can blow up planes with some fertilizer and now we can't take a Diet Coke on the plane with us.

Personally, I would rather just live with the danger rather than go through all the hassle to be "safe".

[/ QUOTE ]

1) You're underestimating the scope of this plan and the extent which they were taking it out
2) Keeping the Diet Coke out of your system will add years to your life

Seriously--is the extra hour of "hassle" at the airport really a big deal? I can just hear the same poster/people complaining about "beaurocrats" who didn't take necessary measures to stop a plot that took out 4 UK to US bound planes.

I fly 4-6 times per year and have no problem adding an extra couple hours onto my travel time. Especially if 2 of those times has me flying to Vegas...I'm usually pretty excited to go and anxious anyway

Well, I respect your opinion, but I think I'm willing to go through a little extra hassle at the security checkpoint if it reduces the risk of another September 11 happening.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course you know it won't, right?

It's all window dressing, the airlines want you to believe they've got your back when the reality is that you still simply have to trust both your fellow man and the massive odds against your plane being hijacked/bombed/filled with snakes.

I know that banning Coke on flights will not prevent another terror attack from happening, but steps like that (no matter how small) do make it more difficult, which in turn makes it take longer for an attack to happen, which in turn gives us more time to kill the people who order such attacks. To put it another way, there is no one thing we can do to stop it from happening, but doing something is better than nothing.

I've been wearing sandals when traveling since 9/11. I never have to take them off...

A bad beat is going to be when they blow up a subway or a ferry boat where there is zero security because everyone is paying so much attention to air travel.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm quite amazed this hasn't happened yet. What happens when suicide bombers start choosing parades, celebrations as the venues for their ridiculous go-meet-allah actions. I'd say we are lucky in North American to have averted any such attempts over the past 5 years. I watched a show last night about terrorism in Britain. In an open forum, about 25 young Brit muslims were praising 9/11 attacks. Apparently there are over 1 million muslims living in Britain, with a substantial amount having not been integrated into Brit society.

This multi-culturism concept that has swept across First World countries (and which Canada -- my country-- has fully bought into) has some real downfalls to it. (1) Cultural isolation (2) the weakening of the broader culture. Canada, for example, is now known as a "culture of cultures." So Canada itself is becoming cultureless, although it may contain many cultures. What the hell does it mean to be Canadian? More and more, it means less and less.

Further, this idea that "all cultures are equal" is something I vehemently disagree with. Any culture that supresses women into subserviant roles is not a culture I can agree with. Unfortunately, my Canadian government disagrees and allows immigration of this kind of culture by the scores.

Of course, this is exactly what the government wants. The media jump all over stuff like this in their fear mongering (which, to be fair, they do for EVERYTHING. If I had $1 for every 11pm news teaser that implored me to watch to find out about the new <insert deadly risk here>, I'd be palying 20/40 instead of 5/10), and people go "Oh, I guess it's worth not being able to take a bottle of water on the plane and waiting an extra hour to get on my 3 hours flight to be safer" when they're not any safer.

And it did a lot of good to the folks in Spain or on the London Underground, too.

As has been mentioned, you shouldn't be so amazed.

...schools, churches, playgrounds, concerts...

Hey, welcome to Israel/England/Spain/pretty much anywhere but the US or Canada.

Here in the US we're happy just keeping it to the occasional nutbar who bursts into a Dennys with an assault rifle. At least they're white and Christian, so they can't be terrorists.

"Bought into" implies it's some sort of new concept, when in fact it's kind of the history of the country.

[ QUOTE ]

Yeah, they should get really militant about keeping certain people out. After all, look at how well it's worked in Israel!
