$10 million in cash, at 5% interest, throws off $500K a year.

I think I could live on that pretty comfortably forever.

About a month ago, during a period of serious burnout at work, I sat down with a spreadsheet and calculated what required asset allocation I would need to never have to work again. I figured out that if I could invest $1.2 million in after tax dollars, I could retire and live off the interest/dividends.

Once I did the calculations for how big the lotto had to be so that I never had to work again. My number was $7M before taxes.
