Ive never heard the guitarist on this tour, but RW made a brilliant move with Doyle Bramhall II, and I dont expect any less with this tour. As a long time Floyd tour follower (over 50 shows, including one with Syd...sorta) I was happy that Live8 didnt result in a reunion tour.

Those shows would turn into Stadium extravaganzas that dont fit the music well, and I dont miss Gilmour's guitar at all when the quality of his stand-ins is so high.

I can understand someone who didnt see the whole group together wanting to see it intact for the historical vibe, but musically a Waters tour kicks a Floyd tour's arse.

David Gilmour was, and always will be, Pink Floyd. He provided both the finest guitar-work in the history of rock music, and the haunting vocals that are the other cornerstone of the Floyd sound.

Roger Waters on the otherhand, contributed some less memorable vocals and session-musician quality bass guitar.

Considering the above it is hardly surprising that Floyd experienced the vast majority of their commercial success in the late eighties and early nineties after Waters had left the band.

Waters has been an irrelevance for the past 25 years.

While Gilmour's guitar work is brilliant (I love Gilmour), Waters is the guru. Come on man, he conceived of and crafted anything and everything that makes Floyd legendary. While post-Waters "Pink Floyd" albums may have sold more copies than Waters albums, IMO they are quite inferior. Gilmour can't write songs for [censored].

And Copernicus, the guitarist on the upcoming tour is Snowy White. He played live as a second lead on the Animals tour and is highly competent. The band recorded Pigs on the Wing with both parts brideged by a nice Snowy White guitar solo.

Roger Waters solo is just a joke now. He can't sing anymore. Waters tix are $100 face value for anything decent for the show near here. I would rather see Gilmour than Waters any day of the week.

OK, there were a couple good Gilmour numbers within a library of Waters masterpieces. Personally, I think Division Bell was awful and I prefer Waters solo albums to Gilmour's.

The tone of my responses probably gives the wrong impression. David Gilmour was an integral part of the Pink Floyd I love and one of my all time guitar heroes. I would gladly pay to see him or Roger. But any Floyd "fan" who insults the musical integrity of Roger Waters is a laughable hypocrisy.

Gilmour led Pink Floyd sold more primarily because of the name. I would bet that, had Waters kept the name Pink Floyd and Gilmour been the solo artist, the sales figures would have been reversed.

As far as pointing to one song on a double album as proof of Gilmour's writing ability, that's hilarious. Waters wrote all the lyrics from DSOTM through Final Cut, including writing most of Animals, Wall, and Final Cut by without input from the rest.

However, it's pretty much accepted that Waters was a mediocre bassist. Didn't Gilmour play a lot of the bass in the studio?

As an aside, neither Mason nor Wright were particularly adept at their instruments either (apparently Mason hardly played drums on Momentary Lapse. And they brought in a second percussionist for their supporting tour). That's why I don't think they should qualify as a "prog rock" band. Prog rock, to me, is characterized by virtuostic play, like that of Yes, ELP, and King Crimson.

I have never considered Floyd prog rock.

And while Rick Wright may be no Chick Corea on the keys, he was damn innovative and original.
