Does the Hong Kong still exist in Harvard Square? I heard that after they closed The Tasty that the franchises started moving in. [/ QUOTE ] it did as of a few months ago |

The Hong Kong still exists.
I would say Central square is your best bet, with Davis second. Porter is kind of lame, and so is Harvard square in a different way. You should have absolutely no trouble finding a nice 2-BR apartment in the 1600-1800 range in any of these spots (I have a decent 3-BR which runs 1350 in Davis). |

BTW I would definitely say cambridge/somerville is better than the southern locations if you're young.
They are very quick into south station: T ride is 15-20 minutes from Davis, and around 10-15 from Central. T pass will generally not cover commuter rail, though there are different passes that will. Central/Davis/Harvard/Porter you can easily find a place within 5 minutes walk of the T which are in your price range. I dunno about 2 bathrooms though. |

Here is my take:
1) Don't overlook JP, which is cheap and pretty hip. 2) Cambridge is nice. The redline is nice. Central Square isn't always as cheap as some people imply, but reasonable places can be found. This is especially true if you venture into Cambridgeport or up into Inman Sq. Don't bother with Harvard Sq. Davis is pretty far out there. Porter isn't bad though. 3) Allston is a cool area with lots of young people. It's pretty cheap. The green line isn't as nice, but it is decent. It's a bit of a pain to get from Allston to Cambridge though (although there are buses, cabs, etc). |

in all seriousness, don't understimate the value of living near a T-stop. if you're not a morning person, sleeping in five or ten minutes later is well worth the extra rent.
