Default Bostonians - Help me find an appartment

Well, I got a job in south boston (summer st., 1 block away from south station), and so I'm looking for an appartment.

I'm from western MA (springfield area), so I don't really know boston much. I've been looking around for appartments in various areas, and basically trying to figure out the best situation for me.

Like I said, I'm ~1 block from south station, so I want to get something near either the red line or the commuter rail for further out.

I was looking at some appartments today that are way out (framingham area), not really sure how transportation worked at that time. Figured out that from framingham it's about 50mins into Boston, which kinda sucks. Plus I'd still need a car to get to the nearest station. Doesn't seem feasible to me.

So I'm asking for your help in finding places near the red-line, within walking distance is preferable (I'd like to not have a car).

Oh, I get a T pass as part of my benefits package. Does this cover the commuter rail if I decide to go that route, or are the T and commuter rails separate things pay wise?

Price range for appartment is 1600-1800 for a 2-bedroom 2 bath.

Cliff notes:
Looking for appartment within walking distance to redline, 2 bedrooom 2 bath in the 1600-1800 range (price is somewhat flexible if it needs to be, 2000 is a possibility).

I would suggest Davis Square, its in your price range, right on the Red Line and lots of fun. I lived there for 4 years and had a blast.

how old are you?
what do you want to do at night as far as social life?
why 2 beds? girlfriend? wife? kids? roommate?
are you hooked on redline? open yourself up to green line and walking from boylston st and you have a TON more options, if you stick to red line you are basically saying you want to live in cambridge/davis sq (somerville)

Yah I've seen suggestions for both davis square and porter square. The problem is finding actual appartments. I've been looking online at the likes of rent.com. I'm not sure if at this point I should just drive to davis square and drive around finding random appartments and talking to lease agents on the spot, or what.

I'm 22, have a roomate (and his g/f, no this isn't a problem for me). A 3-bedroom would actually be nice, since my roomate (who is a LONG time friend, there are no problems with this for all of you people ready to say "watch out with roomates") works out of the house (.com bs) would set up the 3rd bedroom as an office (and obviously pay the difference)

I'm not hooked on redline, but I would like to avoid the following 2 things:

1. Owning a car
2. Starting my commute before 8:00 am

Red line south station puts me almost literally right next to my building.

As for social life, I dunno what I want. I mean I just got out of college and am going to have significantly more money to throw around, so I'm not exactly sure. It's going to be a big lifestyle change so.

What about the south of the redline? braintree/quincy?

Edit: I typed 21 for some reason lol, I'm 22 haha

That and boston.com

And assuming you need to be into work at 9, door to door from Davis to Sotuh Station is about 25 minutes, and you would not need a car at all in that area.

porter and davis are cool and I might end up moving to davis next year. Central is actually a decent place to live as well with some affordable housing. I currently live there in a 5 bedroom row house that is around 850 per, but this is on the high side for the area.
