Because having an "invite" system helps it spread quicker... Just like the idiots buying gmail invites on ebay.. it makes other people go "wow wtf? free email going on ebay.. HRMM THIS MUST BE GOOD".. I remember there being quite a few threads people begging for invites, and those with invites left like they were special..

Guys, the publicly stated and privately known reason for the invite system: it allows Google to systematically control the growth of the user base as it wishes.

Some other benefits: helps prevent abuse of the system. social networking benefits, scarcity ~ coolness.
