Default Gmail invite paranoia..

I was wondering about the invite system that Gmail have implemented. Would I be paranoid if I thought that it was to build up some kind of "network of association", where Google would know who knows who, etc..

Are there any other reasons that they would use this system that I'm unable to think of - maybe to stop automatic bot signups or something?

Cause it's still in Beta. They don't want open signups yet. Used to be you'd get 6 invites every couple months, if you were an active user. You could sell them on ebay for $10-20 each at BIN, and it was even more when the invites first came around

It's to stop spammers, and you can't sign up using the same computer you invite someone from.

Not true. I've sent myself an invite and created several gimmick accounts.

...because certainly there is no way the company controlling and storing all your email (and now chat) could do this without going by the invites.

Cause what google has been waiting for all along is the hotmail address of your best friend from high school history class.
