IMO it should have been these and for most it isn't even close. Some of my choices are probably because I'm an Architecture major.
The Acropolis - Greece The Colosseum - Italy Stonehenge - UK The Pyramids of Giza - Egypt Hagia Sophia - Turkey The Great Wall of China - China The Easter Island Statues - Chile |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm pretty sure there are many left standing, the island has a ton of those stone heads all over. These are definites: The Acropolis - Greece The Colosseum - Italy Stonehenge - UK The Pyramids of Giza - Egypt The Great Wall of China - China And these are debatable: The Easter Island Statues - Chile Hagia Sophia - Turkey I've always wanted to see the Easter Island statues and personally think they are very cool especially after learning about all the background of what is known of the construction and the civilization that built them. |

I don't know about The Great Wall imho. Sections of wall built over hundreds of years that mostly connected but not really, and has since deteriorated quite a bit? I don't know where the 'Wonder' is in that personally.
I really want to see Machu Picchu and Petra in my life. Easter Island too. Got to see Stonehenge so far, thats it. |

-Colosseum
-Stonehenge -Neuschwanstein -Sydney Opera House -The Eiffel Tower -Angkor -Statue of liberty Is my list. I think Machu Picchu is the one I want to see the most out of whats left. Angkor left the biggest impression on me, watching the sun rise over the temples was pretty amazing. Only thing that really sucked was the large number of tourists talking loudly at a moment I really, really wanted to be quiet. |

Been to a litle more than half of them. Big mistake to leave off Angkor Wat. Was there in April. Un-[censored] believable. So was Angkor Thom and Banyon, phenomenal temples. Stautue of Liberty, give me a break. Same thing with Eiffel Tower. Nice "building", but hardly worth a wonder credential. Great Wall is also a fantastic sight to see, despite the disrepair in many areas. Where I viewed it from, it was awe-inspiring and a sight everyone should see. The rest I am ok with.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] is everyone serious with the statue of liberty? Seriously, lol at the statue of liberty. [/ QUOTE ] I don't see why not. I mean as far as voting it for the "'merica! [censored] YEA!" factor, yes that sucks. However, it's really the only thing in the modern world that I can come up with off the top of my head that is comparable to the Colossus of Rhodes. [/ QUOTE ] i don't really get the statue of liberty hate. I'm not really up to date on my enormous free-standing statuary, but are there other things that are at all comparable? The thing is like 300 feet tall including the base, and it's a hugely important cultural symbol. What more are you looking for in a world wonder? [/ QUOTE ] The base is hardly impressive or hard to construct. So its a 150 foot statue. What more am I looking for? Something that took creativity and ingenuity to build. Something that pushed the limits of the technology of the time to construct. The Statue of Liberty did neither. If this were a list of free-standing statutory maybe it would deserve a place, but it encompasses a lot more than statues. My argument for the Eiffel Tower being a stupid nomination is the same. It wasn't that impressive of a feat to build it. I'm not denying that both have enormous cultural value. In terms of a 'US' choice, I think something like the Hoover Dam would be way more impressive. Or the Panama Canal (although not in the US, the US was the driving force). In fact I think the Panama Canal should have been nominated. |
