Martino boring? LOL
Okay, so you're not looking for staple stuff here. Try Whipper Snapper from Wanye Krantz's Two Drink Minimum cd. |

Hmm, i have this album which features Django Reinhardt dueting with Stéphane Grappelli. He's awesome (Django). I'll have a listen through and find some good solos.
Edit: The album is called 'The Best of Hot Club De France' try and get hold of it. The violin solos by Grappelli are amazing too. Edit 2: Heres a video of them link |

Hiram Bullock's solo in the Sting cover of Little Wing with Gil Evans' band. It melodic and "outside" enough.

I'm not a musician so I've no idea if it is challenging or interesting. But one of my favorite solos is on Blood Count by Duke Ellington, featuring Johnny Hodges on the alto sax. It's a ballad, so I would guess that it would be a lot easier than something like Giant Steps.

How about something from Blue Trane? I've always liked Lee Morgan's (trumpet) playing on this record and others. Moment's Notice might be good, some instructive changes, at least.

the album that Scofield and Metheny did together (I forget the name) has a blues in Bb on it (again I forget the name), and Sco's solo is awesome....not too difficult or fast (though there might be a couple fast Sco-ish runs), but very tasty and hip and bluesy, etc....I remember after transcribing it, I really took a lot from that solo....
the solo on Mark Whitfield's "Blues From Way Back" off "The Marksman" CD is pretty cool....the first few choruses are really old school and nice....the end goes into typical Whitfield bebop flurriness, but it's cool if you don't know him that well..... also, I really got a lot out of transcribing Chet Baker, particularly "There Will Never Be Another You"....just so beautiful and melodic.... |

I can no longer look at your username without thinking: "he IS the shaft." This is completely unrelated to the guitar thread, but whatever. |

Lots of tasty trumpet (Marsalis) and sax stuff on Joe Henderson's Lush Life album. The only guitar guy I listen to these days who makes me go "wow, that's clever" is Bill Frisell, but maybe that borders on the "modern nonsense-sounding crap" you don't like. I especially like his album with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones.
