Heimdal, interesting subject matter. I do not have ambitions to be famous or to be the best at highest stakes. My goal is simply to make a lot of money in the next few years, so that I can then spend the rest of my life travelling the world with my wife and kids and/or engaging in any activities or endeavors that I want without having to worry about money.

I suspect that while I do love poker, when I do have the money accumulated that I want, I will play very little and occupy my mind with other less profitable interests.

Based on my stats I could probably make around the same going back to 5/10 and yes, the swings the would be much lower. However, every time I open a 5/10 table I want to take a nap. I think as much as we some times deny it, we are gamblers.

I would be quite happy making the money of a 5/10 NL multitabling pro. Not even necessarily one of the top ones. Money is of course part of it. But playing isn't my job (I rarely play more than 2 tables and I haven't learned to multitable well at ALL).

For me the adjustment period for newness and excitement of higher stakes is about 3 winning sessions. After that I want to take another shot and I probably always will. So yeah, money is part of it, skill is part of it, but I don't really care if I'm not as good as all those guys at 25/50 so long as I can flop top set against them every now and then and win more in one pot than I make in a month at my job.

GA here I come baby!

you can make the most money playing the highest stakes, there is no maximizing earn rates by playing at lower stakes then you should. if you play at lower stakes it can be because of variance/stress and because you're not good enough enough

My ambition is to the happy as happy as possible. Poker is a part of this equation, so this translates into trying to make as much money money as pssible with as little stress as possible. I have the roll to play higher than i do, but i feel that the extra income i would make would not be enough to warrant the extra stress on my life. Obviously, for most good players, especially since most are quite young, the marginal utility of money goes down after a certain point as there is only so much that you need right now...

I would definitly like to be respected as a good player, but flying under the radar is fine as well. I remember like 8-9 months ago when i was taking shots more aggressivley, ego was a much larger part of the equation. I wanted to be the best, wanted to be respected/envied, and i wanted to play the biggest games i could afford to.

I feel like i have matured in this regard in the last year, now i make decisions based soley on what is best for me on a monetary and overall quality of life basis. My swings will be smaller, i have have a bit less variance, and this in turn allows me to be better and alot more attention for other aspects of my life like my education, social stuff, and just being a kid sometimes. In reality, i think i am very ambitious, but my ambitions are not comprised mostly of poker goals.

Not really ambitious, no goals to get above 50/1.

Most of you are still living in a dream world. If Frist manages to attach the anti poker clause to the DOD authorization which as majoritity leader he is quite likely able to manage (see legislation forum), online poker's viability in the US is measured in days or weeks not months or years. So either you live somewhere you can play live for suitible stakes and are capable of doing so or more than 80% likley the online poker landscape changes and yanks the rug out from under online pros.

It would be great to make a tonne of money in the next few years and never *have* to work again, but I'm going down the work route, so I dont think I will achieve that. I'd like to make enough to realistically not have any money worries, when augmented with a future job that I like, by which I mean

i) Live in a nice place
ii) Be able to provide a quality education for my kids
iii) Always be able to go to a show or to dinner without having to worry about the cost (within reason).

Judging from your post in this thread, you are probably quite good at poker and you are probably also a superficial douchebag. I would rather be able to act half my age than make a little more money and have everyone hate me, which is probably the case with someone who feels they needs to make lots of money to meet hot girls or be respected.

Anyway have fun making lots of money, marrying some gold digger, and then ending up with half of it. In the meantime, [censored] you.
