do you have ambitions?

From the 5/10 thread

I was kind of joking with that post. I know why alot of guys dont move up to the 2k game. Its a hell of alot harder and at the begining you generally win less for more stress than you could at the 1knl games. The swings are huge, the opponents are way more aggressive but smart about it, and nothing is ever given away. So why play? Because eventually money isnt the only motivator to play cards, and you want to see how good you can get. There are alot of 1knl players who have a bigger roll than me, but I still choose to move up. Im 20 and go to college, so its not like my monthly nut is very high (2k max). If I make an extra 5k tomorrow, ill be happy but it wont change my life in any real sense. So id rather push myself to be the best that I can and see how I stack up against some of the best players in the world (and yes I think some of the top 2k guys are the amoung the top 100 nl players in the world). I think pretty soon ill be beating the 2knl game for alot more than the 1knl game and ill be 10 times the player I was before.

I have got the impression that some of the posters on this board want to play as high as possible (boosted, aba and durrr) while others are happy to play at lower limits even though they could probably win (more) if they chose to play higher (fsu, samo). Maybe this is age-related, I don’t know.
I am 23 myself and I am very happy to make a small amount each month at 5/10 and 10/20 and I don‘t really have any ambitions to be a regular at higher stakes.

So I am just curious about what peoples ambitions are when it comes to poker. If you are only in it for the money, if you want to be as good as possible or if you dream about being the one the railbirds talk about.

I play because the game is interesting and engaging for me. This is more true the higher I play as the players are generally more sophisticated so there are more factors to consider at each decision point. Money has never ben that important to me. Obviously, it's nice to know that, due to poker, I can more easily withstand financial catastrophes (say my house burns down or my car gets stolen or whatever) but that is not the driving force.

grim, dont you still live at home? Im not trying to be mean when I say that, just bringing up a point. Do you need the money? Obviously not and neither do I and I get its nice to have, but what difference will it make in your life that the amount you currently have doesnt provide for. When I do things, I need it to be challenging or I get bored. Thats probably why i couldnt ever go full time pro, there just inst enough in the game to challenge me long term. However when I do play, I would like to push myself to the limit. I recently sent a pm to etizzle saying I dont feel like "grinding" it out at 1000nl for 600/hr. He pointed out how funny that sounds, but also how true it is.

I just feel the extra utility I get from money at this point is really small since im now really confortable financially, and there is more in poker that id rather focus on that simply maximising earn right now.

i play just for the $$. I have ambitions of being 'done' playing... @ least regularly- and 'retired*' sometime in the next couple years.

*by retired i mean if im about to go out for lunch and i see a big fish... i go out and eat anyway- instead of waiting 1hr to bust him (obv. right now i pass up many fish b/c of plans w/ friends or w/e) and treating poker like a job- as i do now.

Im in it for the money and fame baby! Just some months ago i thought i couldnt become the best player in the world but i have a BIG BIG ego and gritted my teeth... Now i fully believe that i can become the best NL player.
I just started crushing 50/100. In the last two weeks i have made over 400K! Life is good right now. site I play at doesnt have a higher table then 50/100 but soon im gonna move and you will all hear about me!

The money isnt the big motivation as the fame tho... although im rich, girls (10 out of 10 girls) is just as hard to get as before (when i was rich). I wanna be famous, real famous and have alot of girls chasing me.

ive discovered that The meaning of life consists of three things. first and foremost to get the prettiest girl on earth (or as close as you can come...).

But to do that you have to be famous so thats the second thing to achive in the quest of fullfilling the meaning of life. also you wanna be famous because you strive after acknowledgement, to have other people admire you.

To become famous you have to be rich so thats the third. when i have achieved these three things i can die a happy man!

Hows that for ambition?
