your turn raise shows a total lack of understanding of this game

Geez, I'm not THAT bad.
The raise was straddling a line between value and protecting a hand in a spot where I had no information as to villain's holding. The consensus seems to be that this is either not desirable or not possible. But I haven't been playing well lately, so that's not surprising.

Nath,
You got really lucky that villain decided to go crazy with a weak 9 here. In general, that turn raise just costs you action against hands that you beat and costs you chips against hands that beat you.

I think we all get now that this is a bad play to raise the turn because a good player is only calling with a better hand, and folding weaker hands, and your only building a pot if he calls, where as there is a better route to take to get to a showdown. Im interested in knowing with stacks this size what are most of you calling preflop with?

what type of hands are you protecting against that the villain would have gotten to the turn with? you have to balancing protecting your hand with the fact that when you are behind you are now putting ton of chips into the pot, AND you might cause him to fold a hand that will not pay you off in a big pot.
