Default Planning a cross country trip

So my wife and I will be driving from Portland, Oregon to Pittsburgh, PA sometime in late June or early July. I have absolutely no idea where to start looking for info for this sort of thing. Is there anything I should really do in terms of planning? Is there a better option than something like google maps or streets and trips for planning the route? Also we will be taking our cat. Anything I need to keep in mind there?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Jared

Do you want to just get there as fast as possible, or maybe something a little more scenic and enjoyable?

im doing a month-long cross country trip for fun this summer. im going to a bunch of baseball games (at fenway, wrigley, camden, yankee stadium, etc etc). also, ill make my first trip to the bb hof, niagra falls, graceland...

im driving route 66 for most of it.

my advice is that if you can, take an extra week to get out there and check out some stuff on the way. itll make the drive less painful and the trip could actually be a good time.

Join AAA (American Automobile Association) and then use their map services. They will sit you down with a trip guide who will give you all the relevant state and city maps, plus a special flip map they make spiral bound for your specific route, including construction to avoid (this is a HUGE thing on that long a trip). Plus of course if your car ever breaks down, then you call them to tow it.

Great advice. I've made 2 cross country trips and have done this both times. Its worth it to join just for all the free maps.

OP - if you traveling the northern route, make sure to hit Yellowstone and the Black Hills in South Dakota - really interesting places.

negative on the winging...best to have your arrangements lined up in advance

I winged it driving from Chicago to LA...wound up in some not so savory lodging establishments

OP, Black hills are wonderful, I am in a town in the northern hills, about 10 miles from Deadwood. There are always games going on the weekend. During the week, not so much. If you are interested and want more information, checkout deadwood.org or you can PM me and Ill help you out the best i can.

Also, when in P-burgh, if you want to see some top notch baseball check out a Bucs game. At least the ballpark is nice.
