Default 12 feet in a yard?

Dana Jacobson from Cold Pizza seriously seemed surprised today when she was told that there were three feet in a yard.

Dana - Wait a minute, I'm being told its actually 3 feet in a yard. Isn't it 12 feet in a yard? Really?

She always seemd pretty bright to me before this incident, but now... ugh...

You can't be serious!? Maybe her backyard is twelve feet long. You'd think the producers or SOMEBODY would have straightened this out before shooting the show.

It went down as part of a discussion about a long home run. Ahmad made a comment about the distance of the homerun and said he never hit a golf ball that far. He asked how far 492 feet was in yards or something like that. Dana said something along the lines of "Well let's see, 12 feet in a yard... I have no idea." I thought she was joking at first, but then about a minute later she said the line in the original post.

Wow. Wow. Ahmad doesn't seem much brighter. He must really suck at golf.

Tangential anecdote:

Friend of mine used to work at Orchard Supply Hardware in the actual hardware section. A customer comes in and starts asking about chain. My friend takes him over to the chain section and starts talking about metal composition, breaking strength, whatever. The customer asks about price on a specific chain and my friend says, "That one's $x.yz per lineal foot." The customer says, "Lineal foot...that's about 16 inches, right?"

OT - why was it lineal and not linear? Why specify linear/linear when selling chain?

I think this anecdote is more interesting than it first appears.

Boris,

I'm not sure about lineal vs. linear, but it may be OSH-speak. As far as specifying lineal(r) in the first place, I think it's just a standard practice within a hardware store to separate from square feet.
