Some people find it helps, some don't. Personally, I don't.

Lately I have either been listening to Cardplayers circuit show while playing or listening to holdemradio.com. Much better than music for my taste. (At least until a new AC/DC cd comes out that is.)

I used to listen to a lot of music from my personal library while playing cash games. My favorites were Rocky soundtrack, pop country, and patriotic/inspirational songs. Since playing mostly tournaments, I don't listen to music nearly as much, tnough.

IMO and IME its bad.

You tend to focus on the music attempting to subconciously or conciously sing the lyrics/go with the song.

This distracts you from poker and will affect your chain of thoughts on player reads, hand reading etc.

Playing online I feel that music, or any other distraction is just that..a distraction. It's hard enough to force myself to pay full attention when I'm out of the hand already. Having tunes playing in my ear would make the urge to play air guitar too strong, thereby causing me to miss potential info from the other players.

In B&M I can see how tunes could help, in the right situation. Blocking out table chatter could be a positive, or a negative, depending on the content.

Every once in awhile when I'm in the mood I'll put on a set of headphones while playing cards. In my opinion, it actually helps me concentrate a bit harder and helps me slow down and think about the situation. While playing though, I'll only listen to classical music, preferably piano solos, no words...just music to keep my mind and body relaxed.
