Interesting story here. If highschool ex-gang bangers can design and build this car relatively cheaply, why can't college educated engineers at Ford or Chevy.

I remember seeing some interview with one of the managers at Ford or Chevy (can't remember wich) saying that one of the barriers to a fuel effecient, high-performance car was R & D cost.

The big problem was that the parts for the car, which were donated from various car companies, were very, very expensive. Like six figures, if I remember correctly.

It's the same problem as buying a hybrid (except moreso); sure it's good on gas, but when it COSTS 50% more to start out with, it doesn't really matter.
