Default So which U.S. president do you consider to have been \"great\"?

FDR and Lincoln are getting hate in the other thread, so I ask you to name one president you consider to have been "great" by your standards. Washington doesn't really count.

I thought Teddy Roosevelt did a pretty good job. I think Eisenhower was pretty good as well. Polk was OK.

My mandatory libertarian answer is Thomas Jefferson, and my mandatory anarcho capitalist answer is William Henry Harrison.

But let's try to look forward, and come up with a real solution. I already know who I want to run next election...

He was a real dirtbag before getting into office, FWIW.

On the other hand, Jefferson was a genius before his Presidency, but pretty un-Jeffersonian while in office. He gave in.

Well, Jefferson probably found the realities of governing and politics made it a little hard to stick to his lofty ideals. The Louisiana Purchase was a major acccomplishment, though. Yes, he had the opportunity dropped in his lap, but he had sense enough to seize it. This might be a very different country today if he hadn't.
