Default Ever tell your father that you love him?

I'm Irish-German, born in the midwest, which means I'm about as emotionally warm as a block of ice. When my dad got lung cancer (smoked 2 packs of Camels a day, like almost his entire generational peer group) I flew to Dallas from Chicago as much as I could, took him to chemo, spent a lot of time with him. Last trip down, we both knew it was going to be the last time I saw him, and we just more or less hung out at his house, watching TV. Never told him I loved him, knew he knew I did, but couldn't say it.

Anyway.....

Once or twice

Conversely, how many times-if ever-has your dad told you he loves you?

Once for me when I was like 10

Just about everyday. It's how we end our phone conversations and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Just about everyday. It's how we end our phone conversations and I tried to stop the cycle but he kept doing it and it made me sad so like the weak-willed bitch I am, I returned to saying it.

Eric told Red Foreman on That 70's show today. It didn't go over very well.

On a more serious note, I am also as emotionally warm as a block of ice and wish I could open up to my Dad (and entire family) more.

My father died of cancer 15 years ago. I still regret not telling him that I love him enough times. Though I'm pretty sure I told him shortly before he died.

(Yet, oddly enough, I can hardly bring myself to tell my mother that I love her).

All the time. Nothing extremely touching or sentimental, just a simple "love you" at the end of phone calls or when leaving my parents' house. It would be weird if I didn't feel like I could tell my dad I loved him.
