I had an incident this weekend in a game where I took down the pot but only one of my hole cards played. My opponent said I had to show both cards. I did becaue I didn't care but just wondering the offical rule there. If only one of my cards play's anyway do I have to show both?

I'm almost afraid to answer this, but....
Typically, most rules indicate that you have to show both cards to claim the pot. One minor reason is to "prove" that the other card doesn't counterfeit your hand (i.e. duplicate cards). In a home game, unless there is a need for strict interpretation, I wouldn't insist on this. But, as a player, I wouldn't protest too much about having to show both, either. |

by duplicate cards do you mean the same exact cards? I.E. 9s and 9s? Had that happen at a home game too before. I had it it came on flop.

[/ QUOTE ] Right, whether matching the board or duplicates in your hole cards (though the latter would be tough to explain at the end of a hand, without losing some teeth). I've seen duplicating a board card occur, in a casino cash game I was in. Again, minor reason. I think the primary reason goes something like "we paid to see your winning cards, show us all of them" I can't speak as to why showing both cards became a rule, unless there were conflicts similar to yours and the rule-makers decided to cut out useless arguments. |

I always insist on seeing both cards if I'm the one that called the river bet. Primarily because every hand I get to see is an advantage next time I'm in a hand against that player. Plus I will on occasion call a bet on the river knowing I'm beat just to see what it was they were playing.
I will also point this rule out when I'm not involved in the hand for the same reason, but if I'm not involved I don't generally insist, i just make the comment. When I host a game the rule is you show your whole hand or you muck. Both because I want to see the cards, and because it irritates me when people do that one card crap. But that falls into the category of "my house, my rules" |

Officially speaking - if you were called - you are required to show your entire hand.
Enforcement is another conversation. |

Yes calling the river for info is standard, but in this case it was check check on river. |

Officially speaking [/ QUOTE ] I'm getting the really strong impression from various replies of yours that there are two answers to any question- the wrong way, and KSPD's way. (oh, that's right- you didn't say that, so it must not be true) Nice to know where the official source for all decisions poker is located, for my future use. |
