His getting the question wrong isn't the dumbest thing ever. First off, it's an idiom so he may not have heard it before (unlikely though). Second he is up on the big stage in front of everyone, so it is a lot of pressure.
He also had to do something right to win the fastest finger contest.

i doubt he's stupid. it was a stupid mistake but i'm sure he's not stupid. he realized the right answer one second after he said final answer.
