Default wake up right before alarm goes off

I set my alarm for 8 am every morning and almost every morning I wake up at 7:59, just in time to hear my alarm go off about 30 seconds to a minute later.

Why is this?

maybe you're disoriented and you think that you woke up 30 seconds before, but in fact you were woken up by the alarm.

This is just wrong, as many individuals do get into the habit of waking up just before their alarm is set to go off.

You do, your body is used to the routine and it knows when it is time to get up.

Just because most of Pavlov's theories on behaviorism have been discredited doesn't mean that all of his work was garbage.

Pavlov trained a dog to salivate with the sound of a bell. You trained your internal clock to wake up at a specific time of day. No difference really. It's a common occurence, I usually do the same thing to (only if I go to sleep at a consistent time the night before though).

You can also train yourself to take 'power-naps', without using an alarm to wake up, for 20-25mins or so... they're quite beneficial halfway through the day to refresh your mind/body, and you can get away with less sleep at night

Maybe its because you wake up in the middle of the night and look at the clock and then quickly go back to sleep and forget about it. Until the one time you see your alarm is about to go off you stay awake.

(Put something blocking your view of the clock and see what happens)

That's not it. I can condition myself in about a week to wake up minutes before my alarm clock if I wake up at the same time each day.

its a mental alarm, your body is used to the routine.

On a side note, something similar but different...on days where I know I have to get up especially early, I'm usually able to do that without alarm. Where as normally, I'd sleep right through that time. Now THAT can't be explained by conditioning or routine...but perhaps by some kind of subconscious awareness?
